Tylan's Hospitalization So Far

Tylan
Tylan in his kennel in the hospital. They put a lot of soft blankets in there for him to snuggle up in.

Hi everyone! The Mom here today. I thought you all might like an update on how Tylan is faring.

On Thursday, when he was admitted to the hospital, his creatinine and BUN were incredibly high - 12.1 and 140, respectively.

In the wee hours on Friday, I called to check on Tylan, and his overnight vet tech told me he had eaten half a can of k/d! He had hardly been eating anything here at home, so I was both shocked and pleased. She told me he was sleeping at the time and he had been sleeping for a couple of hours. I was glad that he felt safe enough to get some rest. He needed it.

On Friday morning, Tylan's Internal Medicine vet called me (yes, she works at the hospital I took him to - I chose this hospital partly for that reason). She told me his creatinine had only gone down to 11.5. She sounded doubtful that they could get his creatinine much lower and began talking about quality of life.

Needless to say, my mind was reeling. I was in shock. Numb. This had all happened so fast. I just couldn't believe it.

I visited Tylan on Friday night. He was obviously happy to see me, but he looked so small and weak. He wanted me to hold him forever. I held him for a while and talked to him. He was quite fascinated by the IV/infusion machine on the top of his cage that is constantly running.

Saturday morning, a different internist called me. She informed me that Tylan's creatinine had dropped to 8.6. This is still way too high, but it is a good improvement! This internist seemed to think they could get Tylan's creatinine lower with another day of aggressive fluid therapy. So we agreed he'd stay in the hospital at least one more day.

I found out that Tylan is getting Elura as an appetite stimulant now and is eating well. This is wonderful news! I'm sure we will keep him on this appetite stimulant while he recovers. He's also on a new IV antibiotic.

I visited Tylan on Saturday night, and he seemed to be feeling a bit better. He wanted me to hold him and hold him and hold him again. So, I did. Anything to make him happy. He quieted down as soon as I came into the room and scooped him up. All the staff I talk to at the hospital tell me Tylan talks up a storm all day. That's my baby!

Tylan didn't want me to go (and I didn't, either!). I hope his creatinine falls enough so that I can bring him home later today to continue his recovery. They'll do another kidney check this morning.

The question now is - what caused this and how do we prevent it from happening again?

I am no vet, but it looks to me like he might have a massive infection. The antibiotic seems to be helping him (as is the new appetite stimulant). I need to discuss the plan for him moving forward. Personally, I think he should probably start seeing his Internal Medicine vet regularly. He is just so complicated with all of his health issues, even the best general veterinarians simply get stumped by him and don't know how to help him.

In any case, we are not out of the woods yet, but he is improving, and I am beyond thankful for that! I was terrified I'd lose him there for a couple of days. Now there seems to be hope that he can come back from this.

Please continue to send him purrs, prayers, POTP, and any positive/healing energy. I think it's helping him!

Thank you for all of your support and concern for my sweet boy.

  1. Continuing prayers sent for you both. It is encouraging that he is eating, and that Tylan's creatinine has dropped, and hopefully will drop further.
