What Did We Think?
Most cats don't like water, so giving them a bath can be incredibly difficult. I've given Lita one real bath with shampoo and water - when she was young - and it wasn't a pleasant experience for either of us. When Angel Jewel had chronic renal failure, her fur got greasy. I tried some waterless shampoo on her to help her stay clean, and it worked well, so I thought that this might also be a good option for keeping the lactulose from forming clumps in Lita's fur.
The directions on the bottle indicate that you're supposed to spray the shampoo onto your cat from behind her ears to her tail. Then, you're supposed to comb your kitty.
I tried the shampoo on Lita first. Unfortunately, the spraying sound scared Lita so much that I barely got any on her. She didn't mind me combing her afterward, though.
Carmine didn't mind being sprayed with the waterless shampoo at all. He just kept relaxing in his heated bed. However, he hates being brushed, and apparently being combed isn't something he enjoys, either!
Personally, I think the product is a great idea, but it doesn't seem like it will work in our situation.
Maybe Burt's Bees will make a waterless shampoo someday with a different type of pump that doesn't make the spraying sound that so many cats hate.

I can see that you wanted to make this work but Lita was salted by the noise. A bit of feedback the company might welcome and consider I think. Burt's Bees are a very reputable brand.
ReplyDeleteI think it's a great idea to clean the fur if needed since most cats hate water. I wonder if you can apply the shampoo without the spraying (maybe pat it gently on?) to avoid that reaction many cats have to the spraying sound. sound. Just a thought since it's a good idea. Thanks for the review.
ReplyDeleteI would try pouring some into your palm and then rubbing on the furs...maybe that would help the fear factor to be averted.
ReplyDeletePawppy uses a human Burt's Bees body wash, and petcretary likes their lip balms. They make lots of pet products too.
My Dad gave me a bath once, he was forever getting that fur off of his tongue. We didn't know they made cat shampoo, they are a good company.
ReplyDeleteI use waterless shampoo on Evan on occasion because, due to his hind limb paralysis, he sometimes to get urine and feces on himself when using the bathroom. One of the things that always irritates him the most is that spraying sound. I tried this shampoo out this month as well, and it worked great in cleaning him up, but I would also love a waterless shampoo that somehow doesn't have such a distinctive sound. I even tried spraying it onto my hands or a cloth in another room, but Evan always hears it and then goes running. He runs so fast for a paralyzed little fella.

ReplyDeleteSome kitties do get scared of spraying sounds - it sounds like hissing. In fact, that spraying sound is one of the things my breeder works on desensitizing her kittens to, because some of the grooming products for shows make that sound.

ReplyDeleteI just added a bottle of this to my next order, but I think I'll try spraying it into my hands and rubbing it on Mudpie instead. I have a feeling the spray would freak her out too.
