Jewel's Journey

Jewel always had cute eating habits.  She liked to eat a little of her wet food and walk away and save some for later.  That worked when she lived with her former owner because there were no other cats in the house to steal her food.  But when she came to live with me, that wasn't as much of an option anymore as Milita steals any unattended wet food!

I'd usually watch over Jewel at dinnertime, but when she didn't seem to feel like eating much, I'd put her in my bedroom alone with her dinner and shut the door for a little bit so she could eat in peace if she wanted to - without Milita hovering over her, waiting for her to walk away so she could clean up the leftovers.

Sometimes I could tell when Jewel was done with her dinner because she'd try to bury it.  She's actually the only cat I know who has ever done this.  Even before she got sick with the chronic renal failure, she'd try to bury her food to save it for later sometimes.

She'd use whatever was around - a piece of paper, a sock, a T-shirt....and if there wasn't anything nearby, she'd start to paw at the rug or the carpet to try to make a hole to bury her food in.  It was always so adorable to watch her do that!

Other times, she'd simply walk away from her bowl when she was done.  But if she hadn't eaten much of her dinner, I was the annoying mom who followed her around with her dinner and showed it to her a couple of more times to make sure she was actually done eating.  Most of the time, if I took her dinner and followed her to wherever she was going, she'd eat a little more for me.  She always made it clear when she'd had enough, and I'd wrap up any leftovers and put it in the fridge to feed to her later.

Does your cat have any cute eating habits?

  1. That does sound cute how Jewel used to cover her food. None of my cats can save food for later or Sammy the shop vac will clean it up.

  2. Our little Miss Fitz buries her food too. A bit tough as she can't seem to get her place mat up but she tries. MOL

  4. Sometimes Binga gets shut away because she eats so slowly - otherwise both Boodie and I would take her food!

  6. Those habits sure worked for her. Our Sister Kit rarely eats from her own bowl but she does like to clean up the leftovers from others.

  7. Don't laugh but Annabelle literally eats out of my hand. She wants to be hand fed and like the little diva I have made her to be she gets what she wants. MOL

  8. Flynn eats small amounts at a time. If it is something he has decided he no longer likes, he will eat it off his paw and flick most of it on the fridge door. He hasn't tried covering it up though.

  9. I always had to follow Truffles around with her dish, too. She actually loved eating in the bedroom in private :)

  12. That's a fun memory of Jewel! We have some cats at the shelter who do that burying thing. A lot of times, it is the kitties who lived outside for awhile, or with lots of other cats.

Zoe is more of a grazer, but not Gracie! Gracie will actually try to switch bowls, so that she gets more wet food. MOL. Zoe likes dry better, though, so it all seems to even out between those two. Moosey is a grazer, too. He eats separately from the girls, since they have different foods.

  13. We love reading about Jewel. I only eat a little at a time. It drives Mommy crazy because she thinks I don't eat enough. I used to make her take my food out of the bowl for me. MOL

  14. My bichon, LadyBug, eats very similar! She will take one piece of food...walk a few feet...examine it. Then eat it! Very strange!
