Jewel has officially been diagnosed with kidney disease. :( She will start eating k/d after we get her some on Sunday, and then I will go back to Cat Care Society to get her her kidney medication on Tuesday (because they aren't open on Mondays). Apparently the medication binds with phosphate and takes it out through her poo as to not further damage her kidneys.
She is also "borderline" hyperthyroid, so she will need to be tested again in January.

ReplyDeleteGerry & Mungo
Thank you, Fuzzy Tales and Everycat :)
ReplyDeleteI will definitely check out the CRF site. Thank you very much for letting me know about it!
Hugs to you both.
Big purrs for Jewel. Tanya's CRF site can be utterly overwhelming, so you'll probably need to visit it more than once. But it's a wonderful resource.
ReplyDeleteWe hope she takes well to the k/d. If not, don't be afraid to ask about different prescription foods. Over the course of several senior cats, we tried several, and found that the Purina NF won most of the taste tests in our house. The price was about the same, but it was easier when our seniors didn't turn up their noses at dinner.
Please keep us posted about Jewel's progress.
Tanya's site is excellent. There are a few yahoo groups that are great too.
ReplyDeleteWe're purring for Jewel. The Purina NF went over better here than the k/d.
The Florida Furkids
sending her huge hugs!!! Sending healing purrs
ReplyDeleteThank you, everyone!
ReplyDeleteCarmine and Milita used to live with Jewel, and they all had to eat c/d because Carmine's on it. They all liked it a lot, which surprised me. So maybe Jewel is already used to the Hill's Prescription stuffs? I guess we will find out soon!
We are all sending lots of purrs to sweet Jewel. We know she will do great with the love and care she is getting.

I had a kitty who lived many years with kidney disease. We kept him drinking as best we could cause he was an onery old cuss who didn't like getting fluids. Staying hydrated is really important.
ReplyDeleteShoot! We meant to also say we are purring for Jewel & wish her the best. That typist! Always doing something dumb!
ReplyDeletePurrrrrs to Jewel!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe are purring and praying for Jewel. Our Sammy eats KD, and is hyperthyroid. He's done quite well for about 3 years now, so please continue to be hopeful for Jewel, okay?
ReplyDeletePray for Jewel from Taiwan. Maruko also has kidney failure when she was 6 (she's now 10) found on routine checkup. Has been on K/D for 4 years. Creatinine dropped from 3.2 to 2.3 with stable weight.
